What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government program that provides funding and support to people living with a permanent and significant disability. It is designed to help participants access the services and supports they need to improve independence, achieve personal goals, and enhance their quality of life. The NDIS gives individuals greater choice and control over how their supports are delivered and who provides them. Supports may include assistance with daily living, community participation, therapies, support coordination, and specialised services. The goal of the NDIS is to empower people with disability to live more independently and participate more fully in their communities.
How does the NDIS work?
The NDIS works by providing eligible participants with funding based on their individual needs, goals, and circumstances. Once approved, a personalised NDIS plan is created outlining the supports and services that can help the participant build independence and improve their quality of life. Participants can then choose how their funding is managed and select the providers that best suit their needs. The NDIS is designed to give people greater choice, control, and flexibility over their support journey.
What are the NDIS Key Principals?
Choice and Control - Participants have the right to make decisions abut their supports, services, and who provides them.
Person-Centred Approach – Supports are tailored to the individual’s unique goals, needs, preferences, and circumstances.
Independence and Capacity Building – The NDIS aims to help participants build skills, confidence, and independence in everyday life.
Inclusion and Community Participation – The scheme encourages people with disability to participate fully in their community, social activities, education, and employment.
Early Intervention – Where appropriate, supports can be provided early to reduce the impact of disability and improve long-term outcomes.
Reasonable and Necessary Supports – Funding is provided for supports that are considered reasonable, necessary, and directly related to a participant’s disability.
Respect and Dignity – Every participant is treated with respect, with recognition of their rights, choices, culture, and individuality.
Lifelong Support Where Needed – The NDIS recognises that some people may require ongoing support throughout different stages of life.
